June Calendar

Two June items that may be of interest to SOL folks:

Porch/Party Jam @ Pete’s 1431 Roark’s Cove Road, Sewanee, TN - Saturday June 19, 2010 is the next porch party / jam, the fourth of the oh-ten season. This time it will be some kind of kielbasa or other link sausage product & some potatoes. Start time is 5ish & if you need something other than sausage or potatoes, bring it. As always, if you are musical, bring it on. A bonfire is planned.

I also have a botanist friend who is planning a hike into the Walls of Jericho area on Sunday 6/27/10 - probably start about 9:30ish

Yoga with Mary Ann

I’ll be offering two yoga classes on Tuesday evening in the dance studio in the Fowler Center. The first class will start at 5:15 and will be for experienced yoga practitioners, meaning you can do a sun salutation and know when to take a break and how to modify postures for yourself. The second class will be from 6:30 to 7:15 and will focus on breathing, relaxing and opening the back, shoulders and hips. This second class is for anyone.

Pack your yoga mat and any yoga props you have (blocks, strap, blanket…a good sub. for the blanket is a beach towel, which you can also use at the lake!). I will have some mats available.

We’ll start the first Tuesday. For those of you who are new to Sewanee, these classes are free and I am a certified yoga instructor (and a third year MFA.)

Can’t wait to see everyone. Let the countdown begin.

Check out this interesting piece by Garrison Keillor about the new world of publishing versus the old. Curmudgeonly and nostalgic, as Keillor tends to be when writing about anything other than politics; a little depressing, as nostalgic curmudgeons usually are; also pretty interesting.

Congrats to Christine Doza, who rocked the selection committee of the Dana Awards. I think the title of her story is funny in this context:

I wanted to let you know that Negative Capability was among the top 10 finalists for the Dana Award in Short Fiction, just a few steps from the winner (yes, I know they’re giant steps in terms of fame and money, but not in terms of the excellence of the work). Congratulations on your strong showing. Obviously your work speaks to us.
